Museum Membership
Affiliations

Through a program called Smithsonian Institution Affiliations, the Headley-Whitney Museum has the opportunity to bring some of the resources of the Smithsonian Institution to the Bluegrass.

Smithsonian Affiliations are among the most comprehensive forms of Smithsonian national outreach. They are the framework through which long-term relationships are developing with museums throughout the country. Affiliations mean that the Smithsonian Institution can more broadly share its artifacts, programs, and expertise. Working in association with museums nationwide, like the Headley-Whitney Museum, the Smithsonian is able to share its collections across the country.

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum complex and research organization. It is composed of 16 museums and the National Zoo in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and two museums in New York City. The Smithsonian's exhibitions offer visitors a glimpse into its vast collection numbering over 142 million objects.

The program was created by the Smithsonian Board of Regents in the fall of 1996 to offer nonprofit cultural and educational organizations the opportunity to have greater access to Smithsonian collections and resources. The programs mission is to make the extensive Smithsonian collection more accessible to the American people by lending artifacts to museums and cultural institutions across the country.
