The Headley-Whitney Museum is proud to present:
El Caballo: The Horse in Mexican Folk Art
March 26, 2010 to April 30, 2010

Opening Reception:  March 26, 2010 6-8pm.
Free and open to the public.

Mexico possesses a rich history of popular art that reaches more than 2,000 years into the past and continues today in villages, towns, and cities throughout the country. El Caballo: The Horse in Mexican Folk Art, opening at The Headley-Whitney Museum, celebrates this enduring legacy through twenty-two examples, including ceramics, metalwork, paintings, paper art, and sculpture.

Each work in the exhibition focuses on the horse and related subjects, which have long attracted the attentions of Mexican folk artists. Since introduced by the Spanish, the horse has held special prominence in Mexican culture. Many of the heroes and saints of Mexico, including Zapata, a rebel leader in the Mexican Revolution, and Santiago, the Apostle St. James, are portrayed on horseback. Today, with their long history as ranchers and cowboys, Mexicans are recognized for being among the best equestrians in the world.

El Caballo demonstrates the diversity and vitality of modern Mexican folk art. Its artisans produce some of the world’s most exciting examples of popular art, interweaving a collective tradition with individual expressions of creativity. Using whatever materials are at hand, these artists fashion an array of utilitarian, ceremonial, and decorative objects. While most of these creations are regional, even local, in concept and design, they share distinctly Mexican features that give them a sense of national identity.

The Headley-Whitney Museum is a decorative arts museum founded by prominent 20th- century jewelry designer, George W. Headley, and is located in the heart of Bluegrass Country along scenic Old Frankfort Pike in Lexington.  The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 12pm to 5pm, with the last tour at 4pm.  Further information about the Headley-Whitney Museum is available on the Museum’s website: www.headley-whitney.org.

El Caballo is curated by Robert Cugno and Robert Logan, directors of the Media Gallery in Garnett, Kansas. The exhibition is toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance. ExhibitsUSA sends more than 20 exhibitions on tour to more than 100 small- and mid-sized communities every year. Mid-America is the oldest nonprofit regional arts organization in the United States. LEXINGTON, KY – The Headley-Whitney Museum Presents:
“Istanbul-Istanbul” Works by Haydar Hatemi

Gallery Opening and Reception
Friday, April 24, 2009—6 to 8pm

The Headley-Whitney Museum is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of works by Haydar Hatemi.  Mr. Hatemi is an extraordinary artist who utilizes hairline brushes to create finely detailed masterpieces.  Hatemi’s works are done in classical Persian tradition of the sixteenth century Herat School and are exceptional in their fine detail to scenery and imagery.  Many of his works are in private collections and museums.  This exhibition features seventy-two brilliantly painted ostrich eggs and sixty smaller painted eggs.  The eggs feature portraits of all thirty-six Sultans of the Ottoman Empire, as well as everyday life scenes and landscapes of the city of Istanbul.

Haydar Hatemi was born in Iran in 1945.  He studied the ancient technique of tezhip and later graduated from the Fine Arts College of the University of Tehran where he also became accomplished in painting, calligraphy and sculpture.  While living in Iran, he won many awards for his work including first prize in the 1971 Gold Medallion competition held in commemoration of the 2500th anniversary of Iran.

In 1983, to pursue his career as an artist, Hatemi moved to Turkey where he opened his own studio.  Turkey’s magnificent beauty and the history of the Ottomans provided the inspiration for the pieces in the current exhibit.  After working there for many years he moved to the United States and now resides in Lexington, KY.

Bewildering, Bejeweled, Bodacious Eggs
Presented by the Headley-Whitney Museum
April 4, 2008June 15, 2008

LEXINGTON, KY – The Headley-Whitney Museum is pleased to bring the flamboyant, beautiful and creative work of artist Lenné Nicklaus-Ball to Lexington.   The exhibition is organized through Katharine T. Carter & Associates.

Exhibit Opening and Reception
Friday, April 4, 2008, 6-8 p.m. Free and open to the public.  Please RSVP: 859-255-6653.

Lenné Nicklaus-Ball, who currently resides in Florida, was inspired by her late grandmother’s love of costume jewelry to create the pieces showcased in this exhibit.  On a 2004 visit to South Africa, Nicklaus-Ball witnessed artisans decorating ostrich eggs and was inspired to create her current work, the P. Nunn Collection.  She whimsically adorned ostrich eggs with jewelry, paint, and feathers to commemorate by-gone eras that included the big bands of the 1940’s and the Southern society of the 1950’s.  Each piece represents a time of fantasy and beauty that will offer viewers a visual celebration.
