The Headley-Whitney Museum Announces:
"A Drive-Thru Art Show"
Downtown, Lexington KY
On Display: Monday, February 14 – Saturday, February 26, 2011
LEXINGTON, KY – The Headley-Whitney Museum announces a "Drive-Thru Art Show." Lexington residents and visitors will have an opportunity to view banners, displayed on light poles in downtown Lexington, created by and for the community. This project was established to challenge Lexington residents to reflect on their perception of art. Teaming with the Spotlight Lexington Festival during the World Equestrian Games, we asked approximately 50 participants ages 2-30, "What word would you use to sum up art?" While painting the banners, participants reflected on the question and gave the inspiring answers found in the show. These colorful and collaborative banners create our Drive-Thru Art Show which consists of 8 double-sided banners with 16 phrases about art. You don't want to miss this opportunity to see what your neighbors chose.
These banners will be on display in downtown Lexington from Monday, February 14th through Saturday February 26th. For more information call 859-255-6653.

LEXINGTON, KY – From their separate worlds, their life together on a Kentucky River farm north of Frankfort, their travels and their common interests, weaver/photographer Dobree Adams and poet/publisher/book designer Jonathan Greene have forged a multi-faceted collaboration of vision and voice.
Many of the tapestries in this collection of work were inspired by travels in Japan and by design aesthetics which are an inherent part of Japanese culture as well as guiding principles for the traditions of Japanese art and craft. ENSŌ or 'Zen circle' is the most prevalent calligraphic image of Zen art. ENSŌ is the background of "Full Circle."
Jonathan's poems are heavily influenced by Asian poetry and Buddhist thought. They provide another dimension, evidence of the intertwining of the voice and vision of these two artists and their shared life on a Kentucky river bottom.

The Headley-Whitney Museum Presents
"The Hidden Art of Sybil and her Other Selves: Shirley A. Mason"
Opening Reception: Friday, January 21, 2011, 6-8pm
Free and open to the public.
Please RSVP by January 18, 2011 to 859-255-6653
Exhibition Dates: January 22-March 27, 2011
LEXINGTON, KY – The Headley-Whitney Museum is pleased to announce "The Hidden Art of Sybil and her Other Selves: Shirley A. Mason" opening January 21, 2011. The exhibition features paintings by Shirley Ardell Mason who gained international attention following the publication of Flora Schreiber's book about her life using the pseudonym "Sybil" and the movies of the same name.
Horribly abused by her mother when she was a child, Shirley's mind protected her by creating dissociative identities or "personalities." Working with Dr. Cornelia Wilbur for eleven years, Shirley was able to identify sixteen different "personalities" and integrate them to allow her to remember and heal. Always an artist Shirley used art to express herself and some of her "other selves" did too.
The paintings in this exhibit were discovered in a locked closet in the Lexington, KY home that Shirley Mason lived in at the time of her death in 1998. The artwork is dated from 1943, before she began working with Dr. Wilbur, until 1965, the year she successfully integrated the "personalities." Shirley, an artist, did not sign work she did not recognize; the hidden paintings are believed to be ones she found on her easel done by her "other selves."
Also opening on Friday, January 21st is "Full Circle," a selection of tapestries, photographs and poems by Dobree Adams and Jonathan Greene.
