  For 15 and up:

Join us for Putting on the Glitz: Personalized Hand Made Jewelry II. Saturday May 22, June 5 and June 19, 2010.
11AM-1:30PM.

Create your own glamorous works of wearable art that showcase your distinctive style!

This workshop is open to everyone ages 15 and older. Participants will walk away with basic knowledge of wire wrapping techniques as well as one to two pieces of personally crafted jewelry. Construct rings and pendants out of beautiful precious and semi-precious stones. Supplies are included in the participation fee; however, the Museum will have extra semi-precious and precious stones as well as additional project materials for purchase. Painting With Chocolate
Wednesday, June 16, 2010 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Paint your palate with chocolate! Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with two different painting techniques to create and personalize their own sweet treats. Each child will leave with two delicious chocolate creations.
ALLERGY WARNING: This activity involves working with chocolate. Parents/chaperones will be required to sign an allergy release form in order for their child to participate.

Tie-Dye
Wednesday, June 23, 2010 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Tie-Dye is always a summer favorite at the Headley-Whitney Museum. Allow us to introduce your children to tie-dye and leave the clean up to us! Children will learn to mix the primary colors to generate new hues within their creations, as well as experiment with creating patterns. Each child will take home their own tie-dye masterpiece! Each participant should bring up to two white, cotton items with them to tie-dye (for example: a white t-shirt or pillow case).

Shell Art

Join us for a coastal experience in Central Kentucky! While exploring the Museum’s Shell Grotto participants will have the opportunity to examine, touch, and learn about a large variety of seashells and the animals that create them. After seeing examples of some of the artistic uses for shells after their inhabitants are no longer using them, participants will then create several of their own seashell artworks to take home.


Eco Art

Prepare to make your friends “green” with envy. We want to show you how saving our environment can be fun and fashionable. After a quick discussion on what it means to “go green” participants will paint and adorn their very own eco-friendly bag and try out a few trash-into-treasure projects. It isn’t easy being green, but it sure is fun!

Printing Pizzazz
Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Swirling, twirling, spiraling things, come see what you can make with forks and strings! Learn the process of print making using out of the box supplies. Participants will walk away exploring various types of printmaking and taking home their own unique printed pieces. Wrap up the HWW’s making a real “impression.”

Mobile Making
Wednesday, July 8, 2009 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Can you keep the balance? Come learn all about Alexander Calder and what keeps his art “floating.” Each participant will use organic shapes and primary colors to construct their own “Calder style” mobiles. Additionally, participants will utilize elements of nature to create another imaginative mobile to take home.

Puppet Making
Wednesday, July 22, 2009 from 11:30 – 1:30 PM
Master the movement of a marionette! Create your very own puppets and bring them to life. Participants will learn the history of puppetry and story telling. Each child will then have the chance to construct and personalize two puppets, including a marionette, using a variety of shapes and materials. Participants will take home their own personalized puppets!
**Following the workshop the group will head downtown to the Downtown Arts Center to see a professional marionette troupe perform a puppet show! Show begins at 2:00pm**

Mask Making

Who or what can you be today?  Participants will learn about different types of masks used by cultures around the world and will see examples from the Museum’s collection.  Each child will use a variety of materials and techniques to create several different masks to take home and use for play or decoration.

Bubble Art
Wednesday, July 2, 2008 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Come play with and learn about bubbles!  Soap bubbles are like works of art, with beautiful swirling colors.  We’ll start out the afternoon making, looking at, and learning about bubbles.  Next, participants will love creating their own bubble wands, trying out 3 different bubble art techniques and creating an “everlasting bubble” to take home and enjoy!

The Extravagant Ostrich Egg Experience
Saturday, April 19, 2008

After having seen the works of exhibiting artist Lenné-Nicklaus-Ball, as well as examples by other “egging” artists, workshop participants designed and decorated their own fabulous faux bibelots using real ostrich eggs!
During the event the Museum made available for purchase semi-precious and precious stones for those interested in taking their piece to an even more grandiose level. Several participants took the opportunity to experiment with carving their eggs using the Dremel drills made available by the Museum.
Using all variety of techniques and seemingly boundless supplies, everyone enjoyed creating their own ostentatious eggs to take home and treasure.

Shell Art Workshop
Saturday January 5, 2008

Exhibiting artist Sharon LaPine gave a demonstration and led participants in creating fanciful castles made from seashells and various accouterments.  Inspired by the artist’s seashell and recycled blown glass castles on display at the museum, the participants created some fabulous works!
