Headley-Whitney Wednesdays

Headley-Whitney Wednesdays are a series of summer afternoon children’s craft workshops that occur during the months of June and July at the Headley-Whitney Museum.

Mask Making
Wednesday, June 4, 2008 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Who or what can you be today?  Participants will learn about different types of masks used by cultures around the world and will see examples from the Museum’s collection.  Each child will use a variety of materials and techniques to create several different masks to take home and use for play or decoration.

Tie-Dye Art
Wednesday, June 18, 2008 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Tie-Dye is always a summer favorite at the Headley-Whitney Museum.  Allow us to introduce your children to tie-dye and leave the clean up to us!  Children will learn to mix the primary colors to generate new hues within their creations, as well as experiment with creating patterns.  Each child will take home their own tie-dye masterpiece!  Each participant should bring something with them to tie-dye (for example: t-shirt, pillow case).  Maximum of two items per child.

Bubble Art
Wednesday, July 2, 2008 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Come play with and learn about bubbles!  Soap bubbles are like works of art, with beautiful swirling colors.  We’ll start out the afternoon making, looking at, and learning about bubbles.  Next, participants will love creating their own bubble wands, trying out 3 different bubble art techniques and creating an “everlasting bubble” to take home and enjoy!

Painting with Chocolate
Wednesday, July 16, 2008 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Paint your palate with chocolate!  Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with two different painting techniques to create and personalize their own sweet treats.  Each child will leave with two chocolate creations as well as a chocolate mold that may be re-used in the future at home.  ALLERGY WARNING: this activity involves working with chocolate.  Parents/chaperones will be required to sign an allergy release form in order for their child to participate.

Details:
All events begin at 1:00PM and may last as long as 2 hours.  Reservations are required to attend and space is limited.  Parents and chaperones may register their children for one, several, or all of the events.  A discount is offered for participants who are registered for all 4 of this year’s Headley-Whitney Wednesdays.  There is no charge for parents or chaperones to attend the events.  Groups of 15 or more may schedule a private event at a mutually determined date.

Please remember participants should wear “art” clothes as the workshop activities often involve the use of paint, glue, and other materials that may stain clothing.

All of this year’s activities are appropriate for children between the ages of 5 and 12; however, younger participants may require parental assistance.  Please see the workshop descriptions to determine if an activity is appropriate for your child.

To Register:  CALL 859-255-6653
Reservations must be made by the Friday prior to the event.
$10.00 per child, per event
Special Discounted Price!  Register for all four events and pay $20.00 per child.

The Extravagant Ostrich Egg Experience
Saturday, April 19, 2008

After having seen the works of exhibiting artist Lenné-Nicklaus-Ball, as well as examples by other “egging” artists, workshop participants designed and decorated their own fabulous faux bibelots using real ostrich eggs!
During the event the Museum made available for purchase semi-precious and precious stones for those interested in taking their piece to an even more grandiose level. Several participants took the opportunity to experiment with carving their eggs using the Dremel drills made available by the Museum.
Using all variety of techniques and seemingly boundless supplies, everyone enjoyed creating their own ostentatious eggs to take home and treasure.

Shell Art Workshop
Saturday January 5, 2008

Exhibiting artist Sharon LaPine gave a demonstration and led participants in creating fanciful castles made from seashells and various accouterments.  Inspired by the artist’s seashell and recycled blown glass castles on display at the museum, the participants created some fabulous works!
