The Headley-Whitney Museum announces an opportunity to design and construct your own fabulous jewelry!  Join us from 9:30 to Noon and express your inner creativity.
This workshop is open to everyone ages 15 and older.  Participants will walk away with basic knowledge of jewelry techniques as well as two to three pieces of personally crafted jewelry. Supplies are included in the participation fee; hanimal vintage necklaceowever, the Museum will have extra semi-precious and precious stones as well as additional project materials for purchase.

Space is limited and reservations are required.  Interested parties should call 859-255-6653 to reserve a space.

Wedding DIY

Join the HWM and other local vendors as we show you the latest ideas and trends in weddings. Enjoy free food as you try your hand at a few of our DIY projects. Raku Firing & Jewelry Workshop

Create clay pendants or bracelets with polished stones. Participants will design and create their pieces on March 10th while learning the raku firing process. On March 24th participants will visit a clay studio downtown to combine glaze and horse hair to raku fired clay to create detailed designs. We will then return to the Headley-Whitney Museum with the fired piece to turn them into jewelry using wire wrapping techniques. $55 for all materials and instruction.

Deck Your Doors: A Festive Wreath Workshop
November 5, 9:30-Noon Burlap Wreath

Create a seasonal or holiday themed wreath out of a variety of materials including burlap, ribbon, faux floral and more! Hung on your door, in a window or above your mantel, this handcrafted wreath — made by you! — is a beautiful way to decorate for the season.

Participants will be provided with a wreath base and all other materials but are encouraged to bring special adornments or supplies from home. A variety of examples will be provided along with instructions on each style of wreath.

This workshop is open to ages 12 and up. Reservations and pre-payment are required.Interested parties should call 859-255-6653 to reserve a space. The cost of the workshop is $20 per member or $25 per potential member.

Each participant should bring up to two white, cotton items with them to tie-dye (for example: a white t-shirt or pillow case).

While exploring the Museum's Shell Grotto participants will have the opportunity to examine, touch, and learn about a large variety of seashells and the animals that create them. After seeing examples of some of the artistic uses for shells after their inhabitants are no longer using them, participants will then create several of their own seashell artworks to take home.

Become an artist for the day and transform a slab of clay into a masterpiece. Participants will have a chance to create their own piece as well as paint and adorn finished pieces of pottery. This really will be a "pot" of fun!


A Royal Tea Experience: Tea Party Etiquette Workshop
Saturday, April 30, 2011
10:00AM – 12:00 PM


tea cups During the 2 hour session, occurring on April 16th and 30th, children will learn the history of tea parties, be introduced to traditional cuisine and atmosphere while learning proper tea etiquette. Following the workshop, participants will also have a chance to view the fantastic tea sets from English royals and American gentry featured in our current exhibit. Join us for this fun, educational opportunity to dine like the royals in our historic LaBelle House.

The workshop will include a sampling of teas including: Strawberry Kiwi, a Kentucky Blend and a traditional English Breakfast Tea along with a variety of tea sandwiches and desserts. Once you acquire proper tea etiquette, try out other tea rooms around Kentucky or host your own tea party- possibly in celebration of William and Kate's royal wedding!

These workshops are open to parents and children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old; participants under 8 years old require parental assistance. Space is limited and reservations and pre-payment are required. Interested parties should call 859-255-6653 to reserve a space. The cost is $35.00 for parent and child or $25.00 per child. Suggested attire is "Sunday Best;" Derby hats encouraged!

Design and construct new fabulous jewelry from your own vintage jewelry collection! Combine your favorite pieces to make a statement necklace that's sure to steal attention. Bring in your mismatched earrings, favorite bedazzled brooch or costume ring; thematic jewelry works best-floral, animal or aquatic- let your imagination run wild.

Participants will construct a necklace out of their favorite pieces of vintage jewelry, ribbons and/or beads. Participants should bring 2-3 pieces from their own collection, one piece for swapping and, in addition, will get to choose classic example pieces provided by the Museum. Supplies such as necklace, vintage jewelry, beads, foreign coins, ribbons, glue and chain extenders are included in the participation fee; however, the Museum will supply extra pieces of jewelry as well as additional project materials for purchase.

Space is limited and reservations are required. Interested parties should call 859-255-6653 to reserve a space. The cost is $40.00 for Headley-Whitney Members and $45.00 for potential members however your finished piece will be valued at $75.00 and above! These workshops are prepaid and non-refundable.

Can you keep the balance? Come learn all about Alexander Calder and what keeps his art "floating." Each participant will use organic shapes and primary colors to construct their own "Calder style" mobiles. Additionally, participants will utilize elements of nature to create another imaginative mobile to take home.

Puppet Making

Master the movement of a marionette! Create your very own puppets and bring them to life. Participants will learn the history of puppetry and story telling. Each child will then have the chance to construct and personalize two puppets, including a marionette, using a variety of shapes and materials. Participants will take home their own personalized puppets!
**Following the workshop the group will head downtown to the Downtown Arts Center to see a professional marionette troupe perform a puppet show! Show begins at 2:00pm**

Come play with and learn about bubbles! Soap bubbles are like works of art, with beautiful swirling colors. We'll start out the afternoon making, looking at, and learning about bubbles. Next, participants will love creating their own bubble wands, trying out 3 different bubble art techniques and creating an "everlasting bubble" to take home and enjoy!

The Extravagant Ostrich Egg Experience

After having seen the works of exhibiting artist Lenné-Nicklaus-Ball, as well as examples by other "egging" artists, workshop participants designed and decorated their own fabulous faux bibelots using real ostrich eggs! During the event the Museum made available for purchase semi-precious and precious stones for those interested in taking their piece to an even more grandiose level. Several participants took the opportunity to experiment with carving their eggs using the Dremel drills made available by the Museum.
Using all variety of techniques and seemingly boundless supplies, everyone enjoyed creating their own ostentatious eggs to take home and treasure.

Shell Art Workshop
Saturday January 5, 2008

Exhibiting artist Sharon LaPine gave a demonstration and led participants in creating fanciful castles made from seashells and various accouterments. Inspired by the artist's seashell and recycled blown glass castles on display at the museum, the participants created some fabulous works!
